— The Mentor's Return - Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Summary

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was a Syrian-born member of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins and served as their Mentor from 1191 until his death in 1257. During his tenure as Mentor, Altaïr made several discoveries and inventions that greatly helped the Order's progression. His leadership saw to the spread of the Assassins' influence in the Old World.

Raised to be an Assassin from birth, Altaïr became a Master Assassin at age 25, the youngest to obtain the rank by that time. He failed to recover an Apple of Eden from Robert de Sablé in July 1191 and subsequently allowed the Templars to attack the town of Masyaf, headquarters of the Assassins. For this, he was demoted to the rank of novice and sent on a quest for redemption.

Tasked with the deaths of nine individuals who, unbeknownst to him, made up the ranks of the Templar Order in the Holy Land, Altaïr began a quest to change his ways and liberate the Kingdom from their corruption. During his quest however, Altaïr learned of a plot far more sinister than he originally believed. In completing his mission, he also cleansed the Order of its treacherous leader Al Mualim. Altaïr thereafter became Mentor, taking the Assassins in a new, more secretive direction.

With the Apple in hand, Altaïr changed the way members of his Order lived their lives, writing the details in his fabled Codex for later generations of the Order to read. Altaïr's vision of the Assassin Order was for them to be spread across the world, living among the people, and he began establishing many Assassins Guilds during his tenure as Mentor. Throughout his travels, Altaïr strengthened his Order, stopping various Templar plots over the years as well as halting the inexorable march of Genghis Khan. Altaïr is an ancestor to Desmond Miles, through the maternal line.

Killed Robert de Sablé and Armand Bouchart, who are both Grand Masters of the Knights Templar, and as such should be superior to regular Templar Knights. Wields the Sword of Altaïr, which would centuries later clash against a Staff of Eden during Ezio's battle against Rodrigo Borgia, and is one of the weapons that can be used to kill Adéwalé and Bartholomew Roberts.)

Speed: Supersonic+ (Fought the projections created by the Apple of Eden, which can keep up with Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Ezio is this fast.)

The Isu believed the Apple could protect the entire planet with its power.), possibly Universal+ with Apple of Eden (As its most powerful, the Apple can create an entire illusionary timeline.)

Standard Equipment:

  • Hidden Blade: The signature weapon of the members of the Assassin Brotherhood, designed as their primary means of enacting assassinations. Consisting of a blade that can be discreetly extended or retracted from a bracer or gauntlet, the Hidden Blade's portability and concealability complement the Assassins' trademark affinity for stealth and freerunning.
  • Sword of Altaïr: Altaïr's personal sword of significant power, which he used for most of his life as an Assassin. He wielded it with great skill and ease during missions. The sword would outlive Altaïr and be used by many other Assassin's even centuries after his death.
  • Short Blade: A class of bladed weapons that trade power and reach for speed. In battle, Altaïr wielded a short blade with an icepick grip, and often used it in conjunction with throwing knives.
  • Throwing Knives: Small blades that can kill enemies without armor and rooftop sentries. The knives seemed to be one of the most powerful weapons after the Hidden Blade with a single, accurate hit resulting in a kill on all targets but major Templars. Each knife belt could hold up to five knives, and were kept at Altaïr's waist, left boot, and right shoulder, allowing Altaïr to carry a total of fifteen knives.
  • Bombs: Explosive weapons used by Assassins. They can be employed for a variety of tactics, including escape, assault, and distraction. Altaïr wielded smoke and explosive bombs during his quest for the Chalice. He mostly used the latter to destroy weakened walls and structures.
  • Crossbow: A ranged weapon consisting of a bow assembly mounted horizontally on a handheld stock with a built-in firing mechanism. Altaïr carried one with him during his mission to save Acre from the Crusaders in 1190.
  • Grappling Hook: A tool used by members of the Assassin Order at multiple points in history. It allowed the Assassin to traverse gaps and chasms too wide for him to freerun over and proved indispensable at various points in his mission. Altaïr also improvised by using it to pull enemy guards towards him allowing him to catch enemies from afar.
  • Hidden Gun: The Hidden Gun, also referred to as the Pistol, was one of the innovations for the Hidden Blade and consisted of a small firearm with a very short barrel. During his experimentation with the Apple of Eden, the Assassin Mentor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad saw into the future and was able to miniaturize the design of a standard firearm into a "fiery weapon" small enough to be concealed on the wrist. However, ammunition for the Hidden Gun was scarce, so he went on to refine a combustible powder that could be manufactured from common ingredients. The amount of ammunition this weapon can carry is unknown.
  • Apple of Eden: A sphere-shaped piece of Isu technology. The Apples were designed to be able to project images, conjure realistic illusions, and even turn thought into reality.

Intelligence: Genius (Altaïr gained the rank of Master Assassin after defending Masyaf from an seige of Templars killing Templar soldiers and rescuing villagers along the way before invading the heavily guarded fortress and assassinating Haras, a former Assassin who defected to become a Templar, yet stood no chance against Altaïr. Defeated and killed the Master of the Tower in close combat, a high-ranking member of the Templar Order who commanded the Jerusalem Tower. Sneaked into a Templar camp in Acre by disguising himself as a Templar soldier. Escaped a Templar camp after assassinating their commander by launching himself over the barricades with a catapult. Fought and assassinated Harash, former keeper of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins and thus Al Mualim's second-in-command. Fought and killed Basilisk. Successfully found and killed the traitor within Masyaf who allowed the Templar's entrance. Was given the mission to assassinate nine men from the ranks of both Saracens and Crusaders, including Robert de Sablé, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and sucessfully tracked and killed them all. Sneaked his way into Garnier de Naplouse's heavily guarded hospital without being noticed and succesfully assassinated him. Successfully assassinated Talal, even through Talal was aware of Altaïr's assassination plans and had prepared a trap for him. Broke into Abu'l Nuqoud's palace during a large party , killing several archers before assassinating Abu'l Nuqoud's bodyguards, follwed by Abu'l Nuqoud himself. Fought and assassinated several Crusaders from the army of King Richard I, including high ranking members such as William of Montferrat. Successfully assassinated Sibrand, a paranoid Templar who had filled the city with knights specifically tasked with hunting down and killing any Assassin, and hid himself inside a highly guarded ship, yet none of this was able to stop Altaïr. Managed to indetify, locate, and assassinate Jubair al Hakim, even through he had no idea how Jubair al Hakim looked like or how he was upon arriving at Damascus. Single handedly defeated a large group of high ranking Templar Knights during an ambush designed to protect Robert de Sablé. Tracked down Robert de Sablé through the Battle of Arsuf, before single handedly defeating his entire team of elite Templars and assassinating him. Held his own even while being heavily outnumbered against several mind controlled Assassins during his return to Masyaf before Malik arrived to help him, all that while making sure to never use any of his killing moves against the mind controlled opponents. Battled Al Mualim, the Mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins who was armed with an Apple of Eden, and managed to fight his way through the Apple's illusions and reality warping powers, managing to single Al Mualim before defeating and killing him. Took the position of Mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins after Al Mualim's fall from grace, a rank Altaïr would hold until his death. As a Mentor, Altaïr was a strong leader who earned the loyalty, respect and faith of almost the entire Assassin Order, to a point in which many of Abbas' guards decided to defect Abbas and join Altaïr instead. Altaïr redesigned the Hidden Blade so that it would not require the removal of the finger to function. With the assistance of Malik as his right-hand man, Altaïr designed new possible methods of assassination. Infiltrated the Kantara Castle and assassinated Moloch after defeating him in close combat. Infiltrated the Buffavento Castle and assassinated the Dark Oracle while also defeating many insane and aggressive prisoners all by himself. Infiltrated the Saint Hilarion Castle before defeating the twin brothers Shahar and Shalim at the same time, killing them both. Defeated and assassinated Armand Bouchart, Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Altaïr gained extensive knowledge of the world using the clairvoyant powers of the Apple of Eden. Using the Appl, Altaïr gained knowledge of a form of metal that was lighter and stronger than any yet known, and created an indestructable set of armor from it. He also used the Apple to help him redesign the Hidden Blade so that it could contain a device capable of launching small projectiles, essentially inventing a firearm centuries before they were created. Invaded his own fortress, which was under Abbas' control, before assassinating Abbas. Understood and effectively used Memory Seals, Isu artifacts with the ability to contain recorded memories. Was never assassinated or killed in battle, dying peacefully of natural causes at the age of 92.)

Standard Tactics: Assassins will try to stealthily assassinate their opponent without being noticed or getting into direct combat. This can be done at a close range with weapons such as the Hidden Blade, or from a distance using silent projectiles such as arrows. If an Assassin is forced into direct combat, they will battle using pressure points and close weapons, such as swords. If an Assassin is spotted from a distance, they can use ranged weapons such as arrows or bullets to fight without having to get close.

Weaknesses: Carries a limited amount of throwing knives. His Hidden Gun and crossbow can only hold a limited amount of ammunition.

Note: It was confirmed in the Assassin's Creed II game manual that Altaïr's inability to swim in-game was actually a glitch in the Animus software, and that the real Altaïr was perfectly capable of swimming.
